Windows System Restore can easily eat gigabytes — I fixed it without turning it off

Windows ships with the Restore Point setting turned off, and for a good reason. First, Windows doesn't want to decide how much storage to reserve for a restore point, and second, System Restore can gobble gigabytes of storage without you even knowing.
