Every file on your Windows PC is timestamped from the year 1601, and the reason is good math

If you right-click a file in Windows and open Properties, you’ll see perfectly ordinary dates for when it was created, modified, and accessed. Under the hood, however, one of Windows’ fundamental ways of representing file time counts forward from a much stranger starting point: January 1, 1601.
